Why iPhone 7 users are drilling into their phones

[ad_1]

You were always there for us, now you are gone.

iPhone 7 owners desperate for a headphone jack might be drilling a hole into their shiny new Apple device because of a YouTube video.

Secret Hack to Get Headphone Jack on the iPhone 7 by TechRax isn’t meant to be an informational tutorial. It’s a joke, but some people aren’t laughing. The video directs users to place their new iPhone 7 in a vice and drill a hole into the bottom of the device. Then, plug in earbuds and listen to your favorite song, even though sound doesn’t appear to come through the earbuds in the video.

While the new phone is water resistant, it probably won’t survive a power drill.

Most all of TechRax’s videos include destroying phones to see what happens, including boiling an iPhone 7 in hot water and shooting paintballs at an iPhone 6S. According to the channel, Tech Rax has been “smashing technology since 2011.” (TechRax is also the YouTuber behind that Coke and Mentos pool video.)

Taras Maksimuk, @TechRax on Twitter, said he’s been getting hate for posting the video.

Comments on the video include:

Sinus Plexus: Help! Now my old headphones fit in but the phone doesn’t work anymore!

adambsk8: I followed all the steps you said and it won’t even turn back on. do I gotta update it or download the headphone jack app?

Miranda Gonzalez: I tried this, and now there’s no sound coming out my phone. 😡

MackaliMesut: I drilled the hole in it. The headphone doesn’t go all the way in. Do I need to drill deeper? Also my phone turned off because of low battery I think. I’m charging it for an hour now it doesn’t turn on, is this normal?

iPhone 7 owners who haven’t drilled a hole into their phones can use a lightning-to-3.5mm adapter that comes with an iPhone 7 purchase to connect earbuds. No power tools required. AirPods, Apple’s new wireless earbuds priced at $159, will be available in late October, according to Apple.

Apple revealed AirPods, a new kind of wireless headphone. Here’s what you need to know about this new listening device.
